| Love locks: the romantic tradition
Lovers all over the world celebrate their love for one another with love heart locks. They usually attach their engraved love lock to a bridge and then throw the key into the river to seal their eternal love. The engraving and also often the shape of the lock (e.g. a heart) allow the couple to recognise their lock when they revisit the place time and again over the years. It is a visible sign of their love.
In Hungary, the tradition has been going since the 1980s. It became popular after Federico Moccia published his book "I want you" in 2006. He described how two lovers declare their love for each other with a padlock on Ponte Milvio in Rome and throw the key into the Tiber. In 2008, the first padlocks with individual engravings appeared on the Hohenzollern Bridge in Cologne, and many more followed. Most cities allow this romantic tradition. However, padlocks have also had to be removed from bridges because they threatened the stability of the structure. Now that this tradition has become so popular, most local authorities are looking for creative alternatives. For example, the large number of love locks on Heringsdorf pier on the island of Usedom had to be removed due to damage to the railings. To solve the problem, a glass cylinder with these locks inside was installed in the middle of the pier. Couples on Usedom can continue to display their love by attaching their padlocks to the metal bars around the glass cylinder!
Other couples also keep the padlocks as a lucky charm and a sign of their love and give the key to their partner as a symbolic key to their heart!
